In this week’s episode of the AppleInsider podcast, we cover MacBook Air “M2” rumors, Facebook’s report on default iPhone and Android apps, our current macOS utilities, and answer listeners’ questions.
Developer “@Dylandkt” claims the next-generation “M2” chip will launch in the first half of 2022. If this is true, it is also said that a redesigned MacBook Air – possibly in multiple colors – will likely be the first device to sport this next iteration of Apple Silicon. The “M2” will be a separate chip from the rumored “M1X” that will power Apple’s high-end MacBook Pro and iMac Pro devices.
Meanwhile, Facebook commissioned a study to investigate the use of third-party apps by Apple and Android users, and then disclosed parts of the report to The edge. Being generous, you can say that the criteria for this study were not clear and less than robust. But it would list the 20 most used apps on iOS and Android. Facebook says this proves that the proprietary apps taking most of the top spots in this study show anti-competitive behavior, but we discuss the flaws in their argument.
Speaking of apps, next we put together some of our favorite Mac utilities, including the macOS menu bar manager, Bartender. Anyone with lots of app icons on the menu bar would benefit from the customization tools available in third-party utilities. Additionally, we take a look at the Elgato Stream Deck product and why it appeals to both live streamers and power users alike.
At the end of the show, we answer listeners’ questions, including recommended headphones for video editing, creating shortcuts to access Settings panes on iOS, and Apple’s long-standing mission to privacy.
