Major League Baseball will continue to experiment with Facebook Watch to broadcast live games this season, but the number of games will be significantly fewer and the broadcasts will be non-exclusive.

For the 2019 season, Facebook matches will drop from 26 live matches to just six this season. The games will also no longer be exclusive to Facebook Live, an aspect that agitated those who wanted to watch games through MLB.TV or regional sports networks last year when they were turned off on those platforms.

“Collaborating with Facebook will once again allow us to create new ways of delivering content to the baseball fans who engage on the platform daily. Facebook provides a community-driven environment that will allow fans to connect with their favorite teams through personalized on-demand content and live game action powered by an original social broadcast production from the MLB network, ”said Chris Tully , MLB Executive Vice President, Global Media

Major League Baseball is the only major sports league to broadcast matches on Facebook. The change in the number of games broadcast this season on the platform was first reported by Morning Consultant.

For those wondering which games and when they will start streaming on Facebook, Major League Baseball said the schedule will only be released closer to the go live date. As before, there will be one game per week with MLB Network producing the original shows. These will be off-market games and will also be available in some international markets.

Similar to last year, MLB-produced game recaps will return for each game along with weekly recaps for each of the league’s 30 clubs.

“For a third year in a row, our partnership with Major League Baseball will be defined by experimentation and innovation,” said Rob Shaw, head of sports partnerships for Facebook, Leagues & Media. “We are looking forward to testing a new model for live games, which should help the league continue to reach a younger and more global audience. We’re also excited to help MLB build on all of the other great work they do on Facebook, including delivering interactive live broadcasts and recaps of highly social games, promoting the community in their Facebook groups and l ” use of our marketing tools to generate significant business results. . “
