MLB’s At Bat VR app lets you stream games live with Daydream

Major League Baseball (MLB) is no stranger to VR experiences. Now, in what it calls the “first full VR live gaming sports experience,” you can stream games live through Daydream with the new To the Bat VR app. The app aims to combine the experience of watching live on MLB TV while keeping tabs on stats via game day on a phone, tablet or laptop.

Just like with MLB TV, you can choose the video stream you prefer, but with the added benefit of seeing box scores and game-by-game information as part of the same immersive virtual experience. You’ll also be able to see the scores of other fixtures happening at the same time, as well as the conference standings in real time.

The key feature that makes the best use of Daydream in the app seems to be the 3D tap zone. In 2D this lets you see where the balls are being thrown on the plate, but in 3D the experience is enhanced with the addition of color coded hot zones for the current batter and a heat trail of the actual trajectory of the ball. I’ll leave it to baseball fans to decide how useful all of this is, but for an ignorant Brit like me, at least sounds Impressive. Check out the trailer below for more info.

The app uses Daydream’s physical remote, which can be used to change views and stats or toggle IMAX-like full-screen mode. Obviously you will need a Daydream-enabled phone to try out the app, and it will likely work with incoming standalone Daydream headsets as well. Download the app using the Play Store link below, or manually from APKMirror.
