The game industry’s premier awards show, The Game Awards, will air live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Thursday, December 8.
The 9th Annual Awards will be streamed on over 40 platforms including YouTube, Twitch, Twitter and TikTok Live.
The Game Awards will introduce a new category for 2022: Best Adaptation. This category recognizes any creative work that successfully adapts video games, franchises, and characters into other media, including movies, shows, podcasts, novels, and comics.
Maybe we’ve finally reached an era where video game movies aren’t huge cultural embarrassments anymore? Some recently not horribly bad adaptations include Uncharted, Warcraft, Mortal Kombat, and both Sonic the Hedgehog movies, as well as Paramount+’s Halo series.
“The Best Adaptation award is a way for the games industry and its fans to take their hats off to the creative work that authentically adapts and often adds lore and context to our favorite game franchises,” said said Geoff Keighley, Creator and Executive Producer, The Game Awards. . “With so many game-inspired projects in entertainment, now is the time to honor excellence in adapting video game worlds to other mediums.”
IMAX returns as an official partner, presenting the event live and filled with trailers in cities around the world. The official IMAX schedule will be announced in the coming months.
