The brand new production, The I’s in Relationship, hits the stage February 16-19, telling a compelling story about embracing differences, falling in love and how opposites attract. Available for viewing in person with a themed cocktail show, or streamed live online from the comfort of home!
Written and directed by Sharmini Kumar of 24 Carrot Productions, The I’s in Relationship draws inspiration from favorites such as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and Notting Hill. Kate is a starship captain dedicated to doing good in a futuristic sci-fi world. When her team seems to have accidentally caused the destruction of an entire planet and all its inhabitants, Kate is racked with guilt. The presence of a mysterious alien aboard her ship may be linked, but how can Kate find out the truth? Meanwhile, Fred and his warrior sister Sodrae are on a perilous quest to bring peace and justice to their land, in order to free all of the land from oppressive majority rule.
Kate and Fred meet and opposites immediately attract. Their differences are obvious, but will their new experiences bring them closer or will they discover that their origins make them incompatible?
Writer and director Sharmini Kumar is known for finding contemporary resonance in a variety of stories. Kumar said, “My inspiration was based on how fantasy, sci-fi and romantic comedies are genres that you don’t tend to see mixed together in theater, and how opposites attract and how that might work if they were literally different genres.”
Kate is played by Madalyn McCandless (pictured) whose past theatrical work includes productions at the Monash Shakespeare Company, Heidelberg Theater Company and Chapel Off Chapel. She completed her acting training at 16th Street Actors Studio in 2021. Usually she will gravitate towards comedic roles, so she is very excited to branch out with Kate.
Callum Gault (pictured), who plays Fred, has been acting since he was 11, after the Doctor Who reboot sparked his desire to be a time-traveling alien He is currently filming the feature film Jett and is voicing the lead role in an upcoming indie video game. Callum trained at Centerstage Performing Arts School. Back from his job in London, he returns to the stage with the role of Fred and is delighted with a dynamic and multidimensional role.
