Summer Game Fest and The Game Awards will be shown in IMAX theaters in the US, Canada and the UK this year.
Geoff Keighley wants to maintain the prestige of video game ads by showing both Summer Games Fest and The Game Awards in IMAX theaters.
The announcement was made via a YouTube video uploaded this afternoon, featuring a reel of highlights from reports and reveals from previous years of the event. Between game clips like Forbidden Horizon West and Ring of Elden, who have appeared at Summer Game Fest and The Game Awards in the past, the video reveals a new date for Summer Game Fest 2022, June 9, and a window for The Game Awards, which will take place in December. It ends with the reveal that both events will come to IMAX theaters alongside their traditional online streaming formats.
With the cancellation of this year’s E3, Summer Game Fest is poised to assume its position as the video game industry’s premier event of the summer. Last year’s Summer Game Fest served as the kickoff event for the all-virtual E3 conference. The event included news on Evil Dead: The Game, Back 4 Blood and Elden Ring. It will stand alone as an independent event this year. The event brought together more than 30 partners, including industry behemoths like Capcom, Ubisoft, and Xbox, as well as indie studios like Devolver Digital.
The Game Awards began in 2014 as Geoff Keighley’s response to the end of the Spike Video Game Awards the previous year, which Keighley also hosted. Although it’s an awards show, complete with the prestigious Game of the Year award, The Game Awards has also become a major hub for video game announcements. Last year’s event featured trailers for new titles like Quantic Dream’s star wars eclipse and Alan Wake 2.
The Game Awards and Summer Game Fest have always been streamed online. For those who are not at the Microsoft Theater, where the Game Awards are organized, this is the only way to discover one or the other of the events. For 2022, both events will be theatrically released, lending a bit of pomp and circumstance to the video game spectacle.

IMAX tickets for Summer Game Fest go on sale May 12, and the event airs June 9. The exact dates for The Game Awards are still unknown, but the event will take place in December.
