The following contains spoilers for Stranger Things Season 4, Vol. 2, now streaming on Netflix.

stranger things Season 4 Volume 2 brings the whole extended party back to the screen. With the final part of Season 4 available on Netflix, audiences can’t wait to see what happened to their favorite couples. The characters are reunited before they must fight to save not just Hawkins but the entire world. So what happens with the main pairs of stranger things?

Joyce and Hopper

The final episode of Season 4, Volume 1, “Chapter Seven: The Massacre at Hawkins Lab,” reunited Joyce (Winona Ryder) and Hopper (David Harbour) after a grueling journey through the Soviet Union. Now that Hopper is no longer imprisoned, they must hurry back to Indiana to help destroy the dangers there. But first, the couple gets their long-awaited reunion. Joyce, along with the rest of the group, believed that Hopper was dead at the end of Season 3. She tells him that they had a funeral for him and that he was a hero in Hawkins.

Episode 9, “Chapter Nine: The Piggyback,” opens with Joyce and Hopper in their hideout. They discuss the date which never happened and the two finally kiss. Viewers are thrilled to see them come together even in these difficult circumstances. Hopper pined after Joyce all season 3, and they were one of the most popular ships in the series.

Eleven and Mike

Similar to Joyce and Hopper, Mike (Finn Wolfhard) along with Will (Noah Schnapp), Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) and Argyle (Eduardo Franco) travel across the American Southwest to rescue Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) from her captors. Once they get there, Mike and El immediately bond with each other. In “Chapter Nine: The Piggyback”, Mike is interrupted before he can apologize and explain what happened before El was arrested.

During El’s “piggyback” ride through Max’s (Sadie Sink) mind, El is trapped by Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). She is not strong enough to overpower him, which puts her and Max in grave danger. With Will’s encouragement that Mike is “the heart”, Mike tells El that he loves her and admits his true feelings. El is empowered by his admission and uses it to his advantage, beating Vecna for the time being. Mike and El, unfortunately, don’t get a chance to talk more about their relationship and the events leading up to his battle against Vecna, but hopefully Season 5 will give fans a lot more moments between the two.

Lucas and Max

Season 4 of stranger things begins with Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) and Max are no longer dating. This is likely the result of Max’s depression and isolation after the death of Billy (Dacre Montgomery) at the end of Season 3. Max is very vulnerable and pushes Lucas away, and it’s obvious he always has feelings for her. Throughout Season 4, Lucas tries to protect Max from Vecna, though by the end, Vecna nearly catches up to her. In one of the most heartbreaking scenes of the entire series, Max confesses to Lucas that she doesn’t want to die just as her heart stops. Her reaction is so heartbreaking, even though she ends up not dying and is hospitalized with multiple injuries and is currently in a coma.

Although Max and Lucas haven’t officially gotten back together by the end of Season 4, the pair still have very strong feelings for each other. Max’s plan to lure Vecna to her and then hide from him hinges on using her happiest memory. The memory she chooses is the Snowball Dance from Season 2, where she and Lucas danced together and shared their first kiss. Even when Vecna nearly killed Max, Lucas’ love for her is stronger than ever and he never leaves her. Max’s fate is still undetermined for Season 5, but maybe she’ll wake up from her coma, recover, and then she and Lucas can explore their relationship again.

Jonathan and Nancy (and Steve)

stranger things Season 4 sees Jonathan and Nancy (Natalia Dyer) separated by distance, as Nancy is not coming with Mike to California. Their relationship is strained by the uncertainty of their future and their college. Throughout Volumes 1 and 2, Nancy and Steve (Joe Keery) grow closer and their relationship is brought up repeatedly. Before the party prepares to return to the Upside Down, Steve opens up to Nancy about his wishes for the future, and later admits that he considers Nancy part of that. Robin (Maya Hawke) constantly mocks Steve’s wishful thinking and encourages him to talk to Nancy.

Although a love triangle is never fully established, it’s interesting to see that Steve is still so attached to his ex-girlfriend. Nancy is also caught up in their relationship. Nothing comes of it though, which raises more questions about what will happen between the two of them. At the end of “Chapter Nine: The Piggyback”, Nancy and Jonathan reunite and have an awkward conversation about the events of the past few months and their future. Season 5 will likely explore the dynamic between this trio.

The different main pairs of stranger things spent season 4 coming together and growing, though season 5 has the potential to break some of them up for good. Depending on who dies in the next episode and any other forces that might separate them from each other, no one is safe from the many horrors of stranger things.

To see how each of these relationships plays out, Stranger Things Season 4 is available to stream on Netflix.
