The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke talks about the decision to bestow superpowers on a character who makes a surprise appearance in Season 3, Episode 4.
The following contains spoilers for The boys Season 3, Episode 4, “Glorious Five-Year Plan”.
The boys Showrunner Eric Kripke recently explained why the Prime Video series gave Jamie hamster superpowers.
Kripke discussed Jamie’s memorable and super-powerful cameo in The boys Season 3, Episode 4, “Glorious Five Year Plan,” in an exclusive interview with CBR. “Well, you know, there’s some weird bullshit in that Russian lab, experimental bullshit. So we were like, ‘Well, we should have some lab animals,’ he recalled. Well, what about Jamie the hamster?’ We all cheered. Jamie the hamster is a surprisingly big character in the books. He gets an incredible amount of story space, which is wild. We felt it was important to let him at least appear at a point in the series. [super and kill someone was great]in a strange way.”
Jamie the Hamster isn’t the only comic book character to get an upgrade as part of his transition from page to screen. Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy also demonstrates his newly enhanced power levels in the fourth episode of the third season, unleashing a deadly energy blast from his chest capable of knocking down Boys heavy hitter Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara). In the same interview with CBR, Kripke explained why Soldier Boy is different from his comic book counterpart, revealing that the character has been revamped to serve as a compelling threat to Antony Starr’s Homelander.
As unforgettable as Jamie the Hamster’s brief appearance was in Episode 4, it arguably pales in comparison to The boys Season 3 celebrity cameo: Charlize Theron as an actor playing season 2 villain Stormfront. Theron’s involvement in the opening sequence of episode 1, “Payback”, was all the more shocking as it coincided with his appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness a month earlier. Kripke has since confirmed that this cast overlap between The boys and the strange doctor the sequel was unintentional, however.
The series’ canon changes and cameos also seem to have paid off. The boys Season 3 holds a Certified Fresh rating on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, with its current review score of 96%. The audience score for the Prime Video series is slightly lower, at 86%. This follows reports that The boys is bombarded with reviews on the Prime Video platform, with common complaints including the show’s graphic content, politically charged themes and weekly airing schedule.
